The Organisation
The African Synthesis Centre for Climate Change, Environment and Development (ASCEND) is a research synthesis centre that aims to accelerate discoveries for more rapid, equitable, and sustained action on climate change and development for vulnerable people and places. We are based in the African Climate and Development Initiative at the University of Cape Town.

ASCEND was launched in October 2023 and is the first synthesis research centre in Africa focused on climate change. ASCEND hosts transdisciplinary teams of researchers, policymakers, and practitioners drawn from across Africa and globally that integrate diverse existing data and knowledge to better understand climate risks and solutions. ASCEND teams have up to 15 participants with each team having multiple in-person meetings at ASCEND over a 2-year period. By growing to full capacity over the next several years, ASCEND expects to host 30–40 team meetings per year, which will amount to up to 600 climate change researchers, practitioners, and policymakers using the ASCEND research infrastructure each year to enhance climate change policy and practice.

The Role
This is a senior leadership position in ASCEND. If you have initiative and ambition to enable research for improved climate action and excellent management skills then this is a great opportunity to join a growing team dedicated to working across climate science, policy, and practice.

The role will include:
– Leading the implementation of ASCEND strategy in collaboration with
the ASCEND Director,
– Designing the calls for ASCEND teams and overseeing hosting teams,
– Leading the evaluation process of ASCEND,
– Mentorship of Postdoctoral Research Fellows,
– Representing ASCEND at events locally and internationally and managing
– Leading on aspects of capacity building for ASCEND teams,
– Developing and disseminating learning from transdisciplinary practices

About you:
– PhD degree in relevant discipline,
– Work experience leading or co-leading interdisciplinary or
transdisciplinary research projects,
– Passion for enabling research to enhance climate change policy and

The benefits:
– Salary between ZAR961,360 and ZAR1,131,011 depending on experience and
qualifications (with an expected 2024 cost of living increase),
