The Environmental Policy Coordinator will report to the Senior Program Director for CI Peru and supervise the Environmental Policy Assistant to meet CI’s goals in Peru. This position will coordinate the development of innovative policies that lead to the sustainable management of natural capital, biodiversity conservation, water resource management, indigenous peoples’ rights, land use planning processes, reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and the integration of ecosystem services into local, regional, and national development, among others.

This position will support the drafting of position papers on the regional (sub-national) and national legal framework. Conduct analyses of environmental legislation and regulations that impact biodiversity conservation, protected areas, indigenous rights, land use planning, natural resource management, payments for ecosystem services, and climate change. Identifying regulatory gaps and proposing improvements. Strengthening capacities at different levels of government and with other relevant actors. Supporting institutional positions related to international conventions (climate change, biodiversity, among others). Ensuring compliance with environmental and social safeguards in the interventions of CI Peru and the strategic partners we finance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support the technical team in analyzing national legislation related to climate change and payment for ecosystem services, including REDD+, water resources, and land use planning, among others; prepare technical documents and publications.
• Support the implementation of initiatives and projects aimed at linking national climate change and deforestation reduction strategies with the regions, considering regional development plans.
• Provide technical assistance for the preparation of policy papers, briefs, reports, and dissemination materials with inputs from pilot projects, applicable to the design of local and regional policies on water resources, natural capital, biodiversity, land use planning, and ecosystem services
• Supervise the Environmental Policy Assistant, complying with the processes of establishing metrics, performance evaluation, technical and administrative approvals
• Ensure the correct implementation of CI policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Provide technical assistance and monitoring of international policy negotiation processes (climate change and biodiversity conventions).
• Ensure compliance with environmental and social safeguards in the interventions of CI Peru and the strategic partners we finance.
