The Greenpeace International (GPI) Legal Unit is at the forefront of strategic litigation, risk management, and the legal defense of our campaigns, staff, and organisation across the globe. We provide independent legal advice to advance the fight against environmental destruction and strengthen human rights.
Our Legal Coordinator is a key support role in the GPI Legal Unit, you will provide operational, proactive, tactical, and administrative support to our in-house lawyers. You will ensure the team works efficiently, delivers essential services to the global network of Greenpeace organisations, and supports the Legal Unit’s project management work. You will be the central point of contact for the Global Legal Community, coordinating internal communication, managing external relationships, and facilitating the development of legal capacity across the network.
We are especially looking for candidates who are highly organised, detail-oriented, and proactive problem-solvers who can manage a diverse workload—from budget tracking and project coordination to complex litigation tracking and international event logistics. It is essential that you have experience working cross-culturally with respect and sensitivity.
You’ll work closely with all pillars of our team, supporting our strategic litigation, strategic defense, organisational law and legal community projects. While a law degree is not mandatory, the job responsibilities require some legal acumen.
In this role you will focus on:
Administration:
Provide administrative and logistical support to the General Counsel and Legal Team.
Manage and monitor the Legal Unit’s budget, including drafting, monitoring, and reviewing.
Maintain general file management for the smooth running of the legal unit.
Train legal unit staff in using legal document management systems.
Assist with Human Resource processes, recruitment, and crisis management.
Support Project Management:
Collaborate with the Senior Legal Project Manager to maintain the Legal Unit’s project management workspace.
Develop project plans aligned with the Global Legal Framework, drafting scopes, objectives, timelines, and budgets.
Central Communication Hub:
Act as a clearing house for the Global Legal Community, ensuring alignment with the Global Legal Framework.
Manage inquiries from Greenpeace staff and external organizations, maintaining the website for accurate legal information.
Provide legal inductions and support global legal colleagues.
Global Legal Function:
Be the point of contact for the Global Legal Community, facilitating Greenpeace inputs into legal matters.
Deliver court documents, registrations, and legal submissions on behalf of the global legal community.
Supporting Legal Risk Assessment:
Ensure timely receipt of proposals and local legal advice.
Complete summaries of legal advice for risk assessments and sign-off meetings.
Skillshares and Events:
Support skillshare event planning and on-site facilitation.
Monitor legal conferences and training opportunities for legal unit members.
