Employment Opportunity: Strategic Communications Coordinator
For: Pilot Projects Collaborative
Location: In-person (368 Av. Fairmount O., Montreal, QC) with option for limited remote work (1-2 days/week max).
Compensation: Commensurate with experience
Duration: Start as soon as possible, as late as April 22, 2024 until August 30, 2024 with the intent of long-term contract renewal

Seeking a skilled, curious and determined systems thinker to work with our multidisciplinary team of designers, strategists and ecologists.

Job description

The candidate filling this role will exemplify a passion for storytelling, clarity, narrative and engagement with people across diverse cultures, skill-levels and areas of expertise with a focus at the intersection of cities, climate change, natural ecology, forests, and other socio-cultural systems. This position will involve team and self-directed work and comes with the assumption of a continuous learning curve with supportive mentorship guidance and independent skill development. This is a high-energy position for an intensely self motivated individual. Good references are essential.

Specific responsibilities will include:

– Leading web development and preparing visual graphics
– Copy editing and writing blogs
– Tracking performance of communications products
– Strategic communications (e.g. events, conferences, and campaigns)
– Monitoring external comms trends

Key Role Focus:

Pilot Projects is leading several projects that will be the main focus of the role: Cities4Forests – a collaboration between Pilot Projects and the World Resources Institute – is helping cities around the world to connect with and invest in inner forests (such as city trees and urban parks), nearby forests (such as green corridors and watersheds), and faraway forests (such as tropical and boreal forests). We encourage our cities to better conserve, manage, and restore these forests, as well as provide technical assistance to align local policy, share knowledge, and access peer-to-peer learning and communication activities to take climate action together. Our mandate at Pilot Projects is to establish faraway forest connections in cities through programs such as the Partner Forests program, the Forest Footprint for Cities, and the Sustainable Wood for Cities guide. Additional points of communication include our Wood at Work community of practise and conference series and the Future of Forest Work and Communities initiative.

Pilot Projects Collaborative (Not for Profit) is a design and systems thinking organization with a shared mission to catalyze big systemic changes. The firm, led by founder Scott Francisco, is made up of professional designers, planners, strategists, ecologists and craftspeople, all skilled at creating concrete, inventive and intentional solutions to challenging problems.

Essential skills, aptitudes and experience will include: – Postsecondary level experience in a discipline combining research and hands-on experience. A communications-focused degree or diploma is an asset. – A systems thinking mentality that can integrate big picture thinking with technical details. – At least 1-2 years of experience working in a professional setting in a communications-focused role. In-person experience will be considered an asset. – Extraordinary communication and copyediting skills in some combination of: verbal, visual, writing, narrative, science-writing, academic papers, other publications, email and social media. – Ability to infer tone and correspond professionally and effectively. Proven experience working in teams, and some leadership experience (e.g. ability to delegate tasks and efficiently summarize projects, progress, and needs). – Software and computer skills, especially with web development platforms (e.g. Wordpress, WIX, Squarespace, Expression Engine). – Should include deep skills with selected software and general problem solving skills with digital tools, services, apps etc. – Project experience. Show that you can get something done from beginning to end. – Good organization skills. The role may involve helping to restructure some of our internal systems and protocols. – Ability to request, receive, and assimilate feedback and criticism to improve outcomes. – Curiosity and ability to seek out and communicate improvements and effective solutions including imaginative, unexpected, and/or conventional solutions. – International experience including some combination of research, travel, employment and cultural immersion. – Joyful approach to hard work that aims to make a lasting positive impact on the world. Nice to have: – Expertise in one or more of these areas is a major plus: Forest: forestry, tropical forests, conservation, restoration, livelihoods – Timber industry, wood urbanism, wood sustainability Sustainability (LCA’s, urbanism, supply chains, materials) – Climate science: carbon neutrality, carbon accounting, climate networks – Nature-based climate solutions – Architecture, urbanism, design practice and theory Systems thinking, integrative thinking, design thinking – Sustainable food systems – Biodiversity – French and/or Spanish Language skills (other European language skills are also an asset) – Professional level design skills, and use of graphic design software A degree (or equivalent experience) in one of the following: – Forestry – Geography – Ecology – Architecture or urban planning – Public Administration – Engineering – Systems design – Communications – Climate sciences or carbon accounting
