The Arctic Council Secretariat (ACS) serves and supports the work of the Arctic Council, and particularly the successive Chairships of the Arctic Council. The ACS is currently composed of 14 employees from almost every Arctic state, and is based at the Fram Centre in Tromsø, Norway.

The ACS is strengthening its team and is now looking for a full-time Web and Digital media officer.

Tasks and responsibilities

The Web and Digital Media Officer will under the direction of the Head of Communications have the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Ensure the operability, security, performance, and technical maintenance of the Arctic Council website and the Open Access Document Repository. This includes coordinating with hosting providers, Content Management Systems (CMS) administrators, and implementing security protocols.
  • Design and code custom interactive web features such as story maps, “scrollytelling” articles and data visualizations etc.
  • Apply best practices in web architecture, accessibility, SEO and design to ensure high-quality user experience, and use of analytics platforms to support content strategy and user engagement across digital channels.
  • Maintain and manage additional websites administered by the organization, ensuring brand consistency, usability and visibility across platforms and domains.
  • Act as a key point of contact for internal web content contributors, offering guidance, training, and support in content editing, digital best practices, visual presentation and CMS usage.
  • Develop and maintain dedicated event pages, coordinating layout, multimedia, and functionality to support outreach and audience engagement.
  • Provide ad hoc support for SharePoint and other document management/archival systems, depending on the Secretariat’s needs and capacity.
  • The Web and Digital Media Officer may be called upon to carry out or participate in the execution of other tasks as needed, according to the overall competency and resources available at the Secretariat.

Ideal qualifications for this position include:

  • A completed bachelor’s or master’s degree in relevant subjects such as information systems, web development, digital media design, media production, computer science, communication, or another relevant field.
  • Proven experience in the maintenance of websites including content, design, and technical upkeep. Experience with front-end development and CMS is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with digital media, web strategies, and copywriting web content.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • A solutions-oriented mindset and a flexible, service-minded disposition.
  • Strong English language capabilities, both oral and written.
  • Eagerness to work in an international and multilingual environment.

In addition to skills and experience mentioned above, the following will be considered an asset:

  • Experience with ProcessWire, SharePoint, Adobe CC, photography, image and video editing, or graphic design.
  • Familiarity with interactive storytelling tools (ArcGIS StoryMaps, Mapbox, Leaflet, or similar).
  • Understanding of accessibility standards and SEO best practices.

Special Requirements
In accordance with the ACS Staff Rules, article 5.2, applicants for this position MUST be a citizen of one of the eight Arctic States (Canada, Kingdom of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and USA). This is an absolute and non-negotiable requirement.
