The Blue Nature Alliance
The International Union for Conservation of Nature recommends that countries strongly protect 30% of every habitat by 2030. The Pew Charitable Trusts, Conservation International, Global Environment Facility, Minderoo Foundation and Rob and Melanie Walton Foundation have partnered to form Blue Nature Alliance, with the aim to catalyze conservation of 18 million square kilometers of the ocean (approximately 5 percent of the global ocean) towards conserving 30% of the ocean by 2030. Working alongside partners, the Alliance scope of work is truly global, and aims to protect global ocean biodiversity, build resilience to climate change, promote human wellbeing, and enhance ecosystem connectivity and function. In addition to partnering with local champions to secure the designation of new and expanded conservation areas, the Alliance works to strengthening the management and durability of existing ocean conservation areas and upgrading their protections where needed. The Blue Nature Alliance is a multi-institutional partnership with staff housed in several different organizations and across multiple time zones.
The Blue Nature Alliance Ocean Campaign Officer will be part of a collaborative, dynamic global team comprised of staff from both The Pew Charitable Trusts and Conservation International, that aims to make an outsized impact on the ocean , leveraging major global commitments and political will to do so.
Position Overview
The Ocean Campaign Officer , Blue Nature Alliance will coordinate e engagement at global events and implement s specific political strategies of the Alliance’s active country /regional engagements and efforts to ensure we are meeting our stated objectives and projected targets. Global Policy and Advocacy work cultivates political champions, leverages international events and convenings , and advocates with decision makers to advance ocean conservation objectives .
As part of the policy delivery team that provides cross-cutting technical support across a portfolio of site-specific projects and objectives, the Officer will report to the Global Advocacy and Political Strategy Lead and work in collaboration with regional officers, country portfolio leads, local partners and other senior members of the team to support short-term and long-term needs. This includes informing and implementing campaign strategies to achieve policy outcomes leading to large scale , area-based ocean conservation and marine protected areas, identifying opportunities and influencers to advance objectives, as well as filling, addressing and helping to support emerging capacity needs with team members and partners on the ground. Responsibilities also will include reporting on progress to senior leadership and cultivating and maintaining relationships with partners and local governments .
We seek candidates with experience and a track record of cultivating conservation action and environmental advocacy and policy outcomes, preferably with ocean experience. Located in Pew’s Washington DC (US), London (UK), or Brussels (Belgium) office, this position will participate in Pew’s core in-office days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will have flexibility to work from home the remainder of each week.

Responsibilities
Under supervision of Global Advocacy and Policy Lead, oversee key responsibilities in advancing implementation of campaigning and political strategy to accelerate delivery of Alliance goals, which includes:
Develop and support implementation of campaign strategies
Lead campaign strategy planning, in consultation with site leads , local partners and the Global Advocacy and Political Strategy Lead, and with relevant staff and partners to develop or refine a theory of change, identify campaign needs, resources and gaps, and where needed, provide hands-on technical support at key events and on the ground support at key sites in order to achieve identified objectives.
Coordinate with regional and site leads to develop and track progress on political strategies , including monitoring project timelines, identifying potential obstacles or delays (external/political vs. internal/institutional) , advising on project management , and reporting to senior leadership.
Coordinate input from team members and partners to inform a cohesive strategy for the Alliance to optimize regional and international events and actively support the Alliance and partners engagement at these events.
Work as a partner with local site leads to help them execute successful campaign strategies that identify and overcome political obstacles, use effective communications , leverage relationships and partners , and build coalitions when needed.
Coordination of the Policy Delivery Team and Vision
- Under supervision of the Global Advocacy and Political Strategy Lead, build capacity for strong campaigning and political strategy across the Alliance and its partners , and work closely with the communications lead to amplify successes and build visibility for the Blue Nature Alliance on the global stage.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with technical partners, government contacts, and key leaders.
- Track and leverage political leaders to accelerate site work and identify new scoping opportunities and scan geopolitical space and progress that may impact the work of the Alliance.
- Develop policy statements, papers and advice for the portfolio . Promptly review and provide comments on draft policy proposals, regulations, and white papers to internal and external audiences as needed.
- Support collating best practice s and curating lessons learn ed on weathering political instability and change and build political durability for ocean conservation across the Alliance and partners and collaborators where appropriate.
- Develop processes for the Alliance engagement in advocacy and campaigning efforts globally and play a central role in coordinating the
- Blue Nature Alliance engagement in key global events, including the organization of high-level receptions and events with partners and coalitions of governments.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, advanced degree preferred.
- It is likely that a successful candidate for this role will have at least 8 years’ experience.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Project management and campaign experience in an environmental conservation field. - Demonstrated experience working with governments and NGOs to advance policy goals.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in diverse cultural contexts .
- Highly organized with attention to detail.
- Key attributes and preferred experience
- Expertise relating to Indigenous perspectives , conservation finance/environmental economics, political advocacy and/or management of ocean or land-based conservation projects.
- Fluency in a language other than English – French and Spanish desirable .
Travel
This position is expected to include strategic domestic and international travel to support local partners in country campaigns and for meetings and conferences. Frequency of travel to be defined based on need.
Salary Range
$110,800 USD – $123,800 USD
The salary range represents a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on Pew’s commitment to provide equitable and market-competitive pay. The actual salary offered will take into consideration many factors including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills and experience, internal pay equity, and business need.
