The Carbon Finance Department (CFD) of GGGI is a global leader in Article 6 international carbon finance technical assistance, running programs since 2019. The department has a core team of 30 staff with a wider group of over 50 working on carbon finance across over 25 countries.
The department runs a number a programs and projects for a range of sovereign contributors across initial awareness raising to supporting transactions and fund management. Sectoral focus reaches from energy to blue carbon, with analysis in specific areas such as gender or economic modelling to support strategic decision making for trading at government level.
The Carbon Transaction Facility (CTF), a programmatic approach of the department to scaling up international carbon trading, was launched in 2024. It encompasses the multi-donor Article 6 Readiness Facility and several Carbon Funds. The Readiness Facility is focused on providing technical assistance to set in place policy and establish institutional frameworks, increasing readiness for countries to participate in Article 6 trading. Carbon Funds seek to purchase Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) generated from mitigation activities implemented in GGGI Member and Partner host countries.
With an increasing demand for its work the Carbon Finance Department is further expanding and seeking two entry level Associates to join its vibrant and dedicated team.
The Carbon Finance Department is seeking 2 Associates who are looking for an opportunity to contribute to its rapidly expanding Article 6 portfolio in support of GGGI’s Member governments. In this hand-on role, you will work with a sharp, tight-knit team of technical experts to shape policy and investment products directly with in-country GGGI teams across the globe who are trusted advisors for Article 6 decision makers.
As an ideal candidate, you will demonstrate experience with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, voluntary carbon markets or wider carbon finance policies. You must be curious, a self-starter, a quick learner, and have a passion to understand deeper detail of this emerging space. You will have a basic understanding of project management tools, and will receive guidance to deepen that knowledge. You will support team members in the engagement and coordination of external consultants and specialized firms.
Purpose
Your role will be central to ensuring Carbon Finance Department projects deliver consistent and high-quality technical assistance and guidance to build Article 6 readiness where it matters most – at the country level.
Your work will involve conducting research, drafting and editing items such as:
• capacity building material for government decision makers, technical staff and private sector actors;
• Article 6 Strategies and Operations Manuals;
• Mitigation Activity Idea Notes;
• Knowledge products.
Your work will directly reinforce GGGI’s value-add as the trusted advisor to its Member governments and an authority on Article 6 on the international stage. You will be mentored by Article 6 technical experts and be expected to assume increased autonomy as your expertise deepens. You will work with others across the Carbon Finance Department and GGGI to marshal the expertise needed to realize the Carbon Finance Department’s ambitious goals.
Engagement
You will be the contact point for Carbon Finance Department colleagues, Project Managers and country teams to follow through and work with others to ensure timeliness of delivery, quality and consistency. Working across a diverse, globally dispersed team of operational, technical and government counterparts, you will embody GGGI’s standards and values.
You will be part of the Carbon Finance Department, within the Directorate of Green Finance and Corporate Services. You will report to the relevant Officer of the Carbon Finance Technical Advisory team or the Deputy Head of the Carbon Finance Department, depending on projects allocated to you.
Delivery
You will work with guidance from the Carbon Finance Department team to play a hands-on role in the delivery of GGGI’s Article 6 readiness technical assistance. This includes:
Conducting research, preparing Terms of Reference and other analyses for the development of Mitigation Activities to open Article 6 investment opportunities for GGGI Member countries.
Transforming data into executive level presentations, factsheets and other decision-making documents for technical staff and officials in GGGI Member governments.
Drafting technical information and leading or supporting meetings, information sessions and capacity building with project developers to increase their understanding of Article 6.
Contributing to the development and quality assurance of Carbon Transaction Facility readiness projects, including the full project cycle: implementation planning, workplans, log frames, budgets, risk tracking, and project documentation.
Supporting project implementation: developing key documents, managing consultant engagement and training, coordinating with government counterparts and overseeing quality control of deliverables.
Developing knowledge products and ensuring they meet organizational standards for quality and consistency, drawing on lessons across the Carbon Finance Department portfolio.
All of the tasks above include ensuring clear, timely and accurate communication with country offices, government officials, other GGGI departments, and/or external consultants.
